Choosing your interview style
Off-camera or down the lens?
There's no "correct" way to shoot an interview. The traditional off-camera eyeline is still a powerful choice for observational documentaries and some narrative styles. It lets the audience watch a conversation.
But audiences raised on social media are used to being spoken to directly. A down-the-lens interview breaks the fourth wall and turns the interview into a conversation with the viewer, which tends to hold attention and land harder. The VoxBox Pro lets you choose that style whenever it suits the story.

How does it work?
The VoxBox Pro uses optics, not electronics. It sits in front of your lens and uses two mirrors, a beamsplitter and a side mirror, to fold the line of sight.
No AI eye correction, no second camera, no batteries and nothing to crash mid-take.
The subject looks straight into the lens and sees the interviewer's face reflected in the glass.
The interviewer sits beside the camera and sees the subject through an opening in the side of the box.
The result: the subject feels they're talking to a person, and on screen they're looking straight down the lens.

Wider lenses, same eyeline
The MK3's redesigned housing takes lenses as wide as 28-30mm* on full frame, so you can show more of the room and still keep the down-the-lens eyeline.
*Tested with a Sony G Master 24-70mm on a Sony FX9 (full frame). The widest usable focal length depends on the lens and how close it sits to the glass.
Clears top handles and long rails
The MK3 is shaped to fit your camera package. The housing now clears the Sony FX6 top handle, even with short or pancake lenses.
It also clears longer support rods, so your rails no longer need to stop short of the front of the lens.
Built-in filter tray
The MK3 takes standard 4x4" and 4x5.65" filters right at the lens, using the included dual-size tray.
ND, diffusion, Soft FX: whatever the scene needs, without adding a separate matte box.
Need a teleprompter?
Clip on the included tablet holder and the MK3 becomes a large-screen teleprompter.
The holder has been redesigned to be sturdier and now takes devices up to the 13-inch iPad Pro.
Run a script, patch in a remote director or take a video call, and the talent still looks straight down the lens. Pair it with our ZeeCue teleprompter software for Mac and PC.

VoxBox Air or VoxBox Pro MK3?
Both give you the same natural, down-the-lens eye contact. The difference is how you work: the VoxBox Air folds down for travel, while the VoxBox Pro MK3 is the heavier-duty unit for bigger productions.
Folds down and weighs less, so it suits run-and-gun crews, solo operators and shoots where you're travelling light. Same down-the-lens eyeline in a smaller package.

VoxBox Pro MK3 FAQs
What's in the box?
The VoxBox Pro MK3 main unit with beamsplitter glass, the adjustable side mirror, a height-adjustable 15mm railblock, a 16mm light stand adaptor, a dual-size filter tray, the tablet holder and lens doughnuts, all in an IP67 hard case.
Will it fit my camera setup?
It's designed for standard 15mm rails, and you'll need a medium or heavy-duty tripod to take the extra weight at the front.
A 19mm railblock is available separately.
Does it come with 15mm rails?
No. It mounts on the 15mm rails you already use. Longer rails are fine: the MK3 housing clears rods that extend past the front of the lens.

What if I don't have rails, or I'm using a small camera or DSLR?
The VoxBox Pro comes with a 16mm receiver adaptor. It screws onto the base of the unit so you can mount it on a standard light stand and position it in front of the lens.
Does it work with the Sony FX6?
Yes. A cutout in the body clears the FX6's top handle, even with short lenses.
How heavy is the VoxBox Pro MK3?
The main unit is about 1.9kg (4.1lbs) without the tablet holder or side mirror.
Do the mirrors adjust for different interviewers?
The side mirror can be tilted for the interviewer's comfort. If you're not using the side mirror, set the camera height to the interviewer's eye level (as you would for a standard off-camera interview) and frame the subject.
Does the beamsplitter glass cause any light loss or colour shift?
You'll lose less than 1 stop through the glass, which isn't a problem for most cameras. The glass warms the image slightly; you can correct this in post if needed.
What's the widest focal length I can use?
On a full-frame sensor, around 28-30mm before the edges of the box appear in frame. It depends on the lens design and how close the front of the lens sits to the beamsplitter glass.
How big is the lens opening?
The opening at the back (where the lens goes) is 140mm (5.5 inch). Lens doughnuts are supplied to close the gap around different lenses and stop light leaking in.
How do I clean the beamsplitter glass?
First brush or rinse off all dust and grit, and never rub the glass while it's dry. Once it's clear of grit, clean it with a soft cotton cloth; synthetic cloths will eventually damage the surface.
Dabbing with a damp, soapy cloth is a safe way to lift dust, and a non-greasy glass cleaner on a cotton cloth is fine once the grit has gone.
Which tablets work with it?
The included tablet holder takes devices up to the 13-inch iPad Pro (maximum 227mm / 8.9 inch between the clamps). On larger tablets, the side opening may hide the edges of the screen.
Which teleprompter software works with it?
Any teleprompter app that can mirror text horizontally. If your tablet is bigger than the glass, choose one that lets you narrow the text area.
